Photography Basics Flashcards
Is the 60 mm lens fixed or zoom?
Fixed
Is the 24-70 mm lens fixed or zoom?
Zoom
What are the factors affecting exposure? ( Exposure triangle)
ISO
Aperture
Shutter speed
What does the ISO effect?
It is the light sensitivity of the sensor
What are the effects of a higher ISO.
The higher the ISO the higher the noise in the photo and therefore is a reduced quality of the image
What affects does the aperture have?
It controls the volume of light that reaches the lens and the depth of field.
What is the depth of field?
Large opening=?
Small opening =?
The amount of acceptable sharpness within a photo that appears to be in focus.
Best is 1/3 in front and 2/3 behind
Large opening = short depth of field
Small opening = larger depth of field
How are apertures expressed and how does changing then affect things?
Expressed as f-stops
A change in the f-stop will either double the volume of light or cut it in half.
Closing down on stop will cut the light in half
Opening up one stop will double the light
bigger number is less light and smaller number is more light
How do you increase the depth of field?
Use a smaller aperture (larger number)
Increase the camera to subject distance = move away
Use a shorter focal length= zoom out
What does shutter speed do?
Controls the amount of time the sensor is exposed to light.
What are the exposure modes used in photography and how does it affect the camera?
Programmable = camera select s aperture and shutter speed
Aperture priority = you select aperture and camera selects shutter speed * used most
Shutter Priority = you select shutter speed and camera selects aperture
Manual = you select aperture and shutter speed
What are the three metering modes of through the lens metering?
Matrix - metering across whole frame * most used*
Centre weight - metering from centre of frame
Spot- metering of a specific spot *only used in specific instances like surveillance
What level of grey does the camera see?
What does that do to light and dark scenes.
18 %
Light scenes such as snow would wee more and make it look more grey
Dark scenes such as arson would look over exposed.
- change the compensation *
What are the aperture setting steps?
1- select an aperture 2- check shutter speed and determine if fast enough for hand held 3- if not fast enough - adjust aperture - add a flash - use a tripod - Adjust ISO
What are the manual setting steps?
1- select an aperture
2- adjust the shutter speed so the meter is 0 and determine if fast enough to hand hold
3- if shutter speed not fast enough
- adjust aperture - add a flash - use a tripod - adjust ISO
When do you use auto focus mode?
Dynamic area
Single point
When do you use manual focus
Night photography
Close up photography
Fingerprint photography
What does Inverse Square Law mean?
The intensity of light reaching an object is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the object and the light source.
- the closer the light the more intense and the smaller the area in the light.**
** the further back the light goes it becomes less intense and covers more area up to a point**
What are the flash techniques?
Direst flash
Bounce flash
Oblique flash
Feathered flash
Fill flash
What is a fill flash used for?
It is used to lighten shadowed areas.
use a sync cord
What is perspective?
The rendition of three dimensional objects onto a flat, two dimensional surface in such a way as to convey the impression of depth and distance
What are the three flash modes
Synchronized flash
Slow-sync flash
Rear curtain sync
What affects the perspective?
Perspective is not changed by changing the focal length
Changing camera position changes the perspective
Perspective will remain constant regardless of the lens as long as the camera to subject distance does not change
