Photoelectric Effect Flashcards
Define frequency:
Number of complete wave start pass a point per second. Measured in Hertz.
Define wavelength:
The distance between two consecutive points on a wave in phase. Measure in metres.
What is wave speed:
The product of the frequency and the wavelength of a wave.
What is the photoelectric effect?
The process that occurs when electromagnetic radiation (light) shines on a metal surface and it ejects electrons from the metal.
What is a gold leaf electroscope?
A device which is used to detect charge. If the gold leaf moves, electrons are flowing.
Difference between frequency and intensity in photoelectric effect.
Intensity is giving more electrons whereas frequency is moving electrons faster.
Define what a threshold frequency is?
The minimum frequency of radiation at which electrons will be ejected from the surface of a metal.
Define work function.
The minimum energy that an election in the metal needs to be emitted from the metal surface.
Define photon.
The name given to a quantum of energy when the energy is in the form of electromagnetic radiation.
