Momentum Flashcards
What is Inertia?
How much an object resists a change in its velocity.
What is mass in terms of physics?
It is the numerical measure of inertia of an object. Measured in kilograms.
Define momentum:
The product of an objects mass and velocity.
Newton’s Second Law:
When a net force (Fnet) is applied to an object of mass,m, it accelerates on the direction of the net force. The object’s acceleration,a, is directly proportional to the net force applied to the object and inversely proportional to the object’s mass.
What is Newton’s Second Law in terms of momentum?
The net force acting on an object is equal to the rate of change of momentum of the object.
What is a system?
A small part of the universe that we consider when solving a particular problem.
Define what an isolated system is:
One that has no net external forces acting on it.
What is the principle of conservation of momentum?
The total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant.
What is an inelastic collision?
The total kinetic energy of the object is not conserved.
before≠after
What is an elastic collision?
The total kinetic energy of the object is conserved.
Define Impulse:
The product of the net force acting on an object and the time for which it acts.
