Phospholipids Flashcards
1
Q
Structure of a phospholipid
A
Glycerol molecule bonded to two fatty acid molecules- glycerol molecule also bonded to phosphate
2
Q
Is the phosphate positively or negatively charged
A
Negatively- means the phosphate is polar- phosphate group is hydrophilic- attracts water molecules
3
Q
Another way to represent phospholipids
A
Polar phosphate head with non-polar hydrophobic tails.
4
Q
How do phospholipid molecules position themselves in water
A
Hydrophilic head groups can interact with the water molecules while the hydrophobic tails cluster together, well away from water molecules- phospholipid bilayer
5
Q
Why are phospholipids used in membranes
A
Phospholipid bilayer
