What is Phonology?
The study of sound patterns and their meanings
alliteration
the repetition of the initial sounds of a set of words
assonance
the repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close to each other in a sentence or phrase
diphthong
a sound made by combining two vowels, specifically when it starts as one vowel sound and goes to another
fricative
consonants that are formed by blocking the flow of air so that a friction sound is produced
prosodics
the melody of the voice, its pitch, pace, intonation, emphasis, volume etc
affricative
a consonant produced by a plosive followed by a fricative
Rhyme
repetition of syllables, typically at the end of a verse line. Rhymed words conventionally share all sounds following the word’s last stressed syllable
intonation
the pitch: how high or low you are in your vocal range
elision
omission of one or more sounds (eg a vowel, consonant, or whole syllable) in a word or phrase, such as ‘gonna’ for ‘going to’
