ASHA defines phonological disorders as impaired comprehension of the sound system of a language and the rules that govern the sound combinations

The repertoire of phonemes used contrastively by an individual
To treat or not to treat phonological disorders?
• Varies by setting
• if certain phonological processes are retained past a certain age it becomes a disorder
• speech intelligibility is always considered
• like articulation disorders, in a school setting, the student must have 2 or more phonological processes leading to an adverse effect on academic progress : in the private sector, 1 phonological process can qualify.
