Articulation disorders
ASHA defines an articulation disorder as the atypical production of speech sounds characterized by substitutions, omissions, additions, or distortions. S. O. D.A.
How are articulation errors typically classified?
According to the child’s age. Depending on the child’s age, errors may be considered typical for that age, or atypical (non age-appropriate errors)
Causes of articulation disorders
• Hearing loss • otitis media • auditory perception deficits • oral structure variations - ankyloglossia, cleft palate, total or partial tongue missing ( congenital or glossectomy), velopharyngeal incompetence, nasopharynx ( enlarged adenoids or tonsils) • neurological - stroke, brain injury, degenerative disease.
• motor speech disorders - dysarthrias, apraxia. • genetic syndrome • developmental disorder • idiopathic (unknown causes)
To treat or not to treat articulation disorders ?
‘depends on setting - school = 2 or more artic errors and effect on academic progress
Private clinic =l artic error can qualify client
