A

A

An over-emphasis shift in linguistic register, usually when a speaker of a non-standard variety goes “too far” in trying to emulate the standard variety

The Great Vowel Shift

A

Development in English phonology across the 15th/16th Century, sound of long vowels in English changed their places of articulation e.. monophthong in ‘house’ /u/ [hoos] to diphthong /au/ [house]
