Phonetics review Flashcards
What is manner of articulation?
where the flow of air from the lungs to the mouth or nose is affected.
What is place of articulation?
where parts of the oral cavity and/or nasal cavity join together to form a sound.
What is an oral sound?
A sound that is produced when the velum (soft palate) is closed so that air can’t enter the nasal cavity
What is a nasal sound?
A sound that is produced when the velum (soft palate) is open so that air can enter the nasal cavity.
When a sound is a continuant, that means
airflow is continuous throughout the oral cavity
How is a stop produced?
by totally stopping the air flow in the oral cavity
How is a fricative produced?
by severly obstructing the airflow in order to cause friction
How is an affricate produced?
by a stop closure that is released with a lot of friction
How is a liquid produced?
by obstructing the airway in the mouth, but not enough to cause any real frication.
How is a glide produced?
with very little obstruction of the airstream and followed by a vowel
How is an approximant produced?
by the articulators approximating a frictional closeness but not actually causing friction
How is a trill produced?
produced by rapidly vibrating an articulator
How is a flap produced?
flicking a tongue against the alveolar ridge
How is a click produced?
moving air in the mouth between various articulators
What characterizes a vowel?
how high or low the tongue is, how front or back the tongue is, and how round the lips are
