Phonetics
The science which studies the characteristics of human sound-making, especially those sounds used in speech, and provides methods for their description, classification and transcription
Articulatory phonetics
Describes how the organs of speech are used to produce the individual speech sounds and classifies them according to he involved mechanism of production
Acoustic phonetics
Describes sounds; is concerned with measuring and analysing the physical properties (such as duration, frequency and intensity) of the sound waves we produce when we speak
Auditory phonetics
Studies how sounds are perceived and processed by the listener
Phonology
Branch of lingustics which studies the sound systems of languages
Phonemes
The smallest meaning-distinguishing units in language
Voiced
Glottis is narrow and vocal folds are held close
Voiceless
Glottis is open and vocal folds are pulled apart
Unrounded
Lips ins neutral position
