Voiced Sounds
Sounds are those where the larynx/voicebox is used
Ex. vowels - ‘aaaaaaa..’
Unvoiced Sounds
The noise elements (clicks, buzzes) of speech we create with our teeth, tongue, lips and palette
What is important about Unvoiced elements?
They make speech intellible, without them we would be speaking vowels or humming
Formants
Certain frequency bands which are boosted due to resonance in our body
Phonology
The study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages
Phonemes
Distinct particles of speech
Ex. ‘sss’ , ‘eh’ , ‘nnn’
Plosives
Transient sounds (nothing emotional) - unvoiced, have no distinct pitch

Fricatives
Unvoiced/voiced
- ‘V’ is Unvoiced/voiced
- Sibilance often occurs from the sounds of s, z, ch, sh, & zh

Semivowels (or Glides)
All have voiced, unvoiced, pitched elemtns
- require the voice box to be activated

Pure Vowels
Sustained, voiced sounds with definite pitch

Diphthongs
Fast transitions, sounds strating with one vowel, ending with another
A-oo (as in house)
O-u (as in low)
A-ee (as in mate)
ee-oo (as in few)
How can distorted or masked recording of speech be repaired?
Individual phonemes
Ex. if we need to fix a ‘ck’, we find another ‘ck’ and copy/paste
