Phobia definition
Excessive fear and anxiety,triggered by an object, place or situation
Specific phobia
Phobia of an object such as animal or body part or situations such as flying or having an injection
Social Phobia
Phobia of a social situation such as public speaking or using a public toilet
Agoraphobia
Phobia of being or in a public place
Behavioural characteristics of phobia-Panic
A phobic person may Panic in response to the presence of a phobic stimulus. This could be them freezing,clinging or having a tantrum.
Behavioural characteristics of phobia-Avoidance
Tend to avoid contact with the phobic stimulus. This can interfere with work, education and social life
Behavioural characteristics of phobia-Endurance
sufferer remains in the presence of the phobic stimulus but continues to experience high levels of anxiety.
Emotional characteristics of phobias-Anxiety
This prevents the sufferer relaxing and makes it difficult to experience any positive emotion. Fear is the immediate and extremely unpleasant response we experience when we encounter or think about the phobic stimulus
Cognitive characteristics of phobias-Irrational belief
Irrational beliefs increase the pressure on the sufferer to perform well in social situations. e.g “ i must always sound intelligent”
