What is OCD

A

Its classed as an anxiety disorder. It begins in young adult life and has two main components- obsessions and compulsions.
Obsessions= persistent thoughts
Compulsions=repetitive behaviours

What are the emotional characteristics of OCD

A

Anxiety and distress,
Accompanying depression,
guilt and disgust

What are the cognitive characteristics of OCD

A

Obsessive thoughts(e.g worrying about being contaminated by germs) and Insight into excessive anxiety (think about the worst case scenario and they tend to be hypervigilant)

What are the behavioural characteristics of OCD

A

Compulsive behaviour:
-Compulsions are repetitive e.g hand washing
-Compulsions reduce anxiety

Avoidance- they tend to keep away from situations that trigger anxiety
