Phlebotomy Test Flashcards
What complications do you have to check for before drawing blood?
Mastectomy - check for middle line, get confirmation from doctor if none to draw from foot
Dialysis - look for fistula
What vein is the least used and why?
the basilic vein bc u can hit the brachial artery or nerve
What are the components of blood?
Plasma, Erythrocytes, Leukocytes, Thrombocytes/Platelets
Plasma - function (+ 6 electrolytes), high, low
Function: Water part of blood
Carries :minerals, vitamins, proteins, glucose, macromolecules (nucleic acids, proteins, lipids/fats)
electrolytes - sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus (ON TEST)
Erythrocytes - function, high, low
Function: Carries oxygen to system thru arteries (oxygenated blood)
High: Erythrocytosis - polycythemia vera
Low: Erythrocytopenia - anemia, low iron deficiency, dizziness
Leukocytes - (+emblen) function, high, low
Eosinophil
Monocytes
Basophil
Lymphocytes
Neutrophil
Function: Immune support/response system
Fights infection
Increased if there are infectious agents
High: Leukocytosis - has an infection/fighting it
Low: Leukocytopenia - cancer, chemotherapy, HIV, steroids lowers it
Thrombocytes/Platelets - function, high, low
Function: Blood clotting
High: Thrombocytosis - possible stroke -> myocardial infarction/heart attack
brain stroke
Deep vein thrombosis
Low: Thrombocytopenia - related to dengue hemorrhagic fever, signs of bleeding
Hemostasis steps
1) vasoconstriction/vascular spasms
2) platelet plug formation
3) coagulation
What are the two pathways?
Intrinsic & Extrinsic
If the gage of the needle is a large number, is the needle big or small?

If the gage of the needle is a smaller number is the needle small or big?
