What is Clinical Pathology?
Testing of body fluids to determine a diagnosis.
What are the main areas of Clinical Pathology?
1) Blood Banks
2) Hematology
3) Phlebotomy
4) Serology/Immunology
5) Urinalysis
6) Chemistry
What does Blood Banks deal with?
Deals with blood used for transfusions.
What is Hematology?
Study of blood diseases
What is Phlebotomy?
Responsible for getting blood samples
What does Serology / Immunology study?
Autoimmune reactions in the blood
What is Urinalysis?
Analysis of urine
What is BMP?
BMP stands for Basic Metabolic Panel.
What does the Coronary Risk/Lipid Panel test for?
The Coronary Risk/Lipid Panel tests for cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
What are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals in the blood that help regulate various bodily functions.
What does a Glucose test measure?
A Glucose test measures the level of sugar in the blood.
What is assessed in Liver Function tests?
Liver Function tests assess the health and performance of the liver.
What does Renal Disease testing evaluate?
Renal Disease testing evaluates kidney function and health.
What is TDM?
TDM stands for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
What is serum?
Clear, pale yellowish fluid left behind after coagulation.

Prevents blood clotting.
What is coagulation?
Blood clotting.
What is an example of an anticoagulant?
Blood Thinners
What does hemostasis mean?
Stoppage of bleeding
What is a platelet?

What is the normal RBC count?
4-6 million
What does Hemocrit measure?
% of RBC in a given volume of blood
What is Hemoglobin?
Protein in RBC that carries oxygen from the lungs to body tissues and then carries carbon dioxide from body tissues back up to the lungs
What is the normal platelet count range?
150,000-400,000
What does a rise in bilirubin levels indicate?
It indicates liver disease.
What is the normal bilirubin level range?
0.1-0.3
