What are the two major traditions of philosophy?
Western and Eastern Traditions
It is characterized by its rigorous way of doing philosophy and presupposes an analytic approach.
Western Tradition
It is often used interchangeably with religion because it treats philosophy as a way of life.
Eastern Tradition
One of the goals of philosophical study is to increase intellectual understanding of
philosophy as an organized discipline or field of knowledge.
Philosophize
This is done by directing one’s attention towards identifying persistent philosophical questions as well as toward comparing positions taken by philosophers on critical issues.
Philosophize
The aim is to learn what philosophers say, analyze the way they think, evaluate what they propose and assess the impact of their ideas.
Philosophize
In a nutshell, philosophizing to be successful, the students must endeavor to be:
- Fair
- Sympathetic
- Skeptical
- Objective
- Open-minded
Willing to take a balanced look at all sides of an issue, even those with which we
disagree;
Fair
Willing to entertain and give credence to points of view other than our
own on an issue;
Sympathetic
Unwilling to accept at face value claims for which there is little rational basis;
Skeptical
Willing to keep their own personal biases, emotions, interpretations, and other “subjective” factors out of the issue;
Objective
Willing to revise our beliefs in light of new information.
Open-minded
We focus on the three most renowned Greek philosophers, namely; Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. These three prominent names of Western tradition introduced intricate ideas concerning the rational capacities of man and how these capacities can be used and developed. The recognition that a human person is a thinking being fundamentally supports the idea that we all have the freedom to explore the world.
Western Tradition
