Philosophy Flashcards
What do people mean when they talk about “God”?
Few theists think of God as a person
More likely to think of God as a power that has always existed (eternal) and caused everything to exist (creator)
What is proof
Evidence which removes all areas of doubt in a persons mind
Can the existence of God be proven
No physical proof
God is meant to be a power - cannot see, hear, smell, touch or taste to prove gods existence
No logical proof
Individuality if you feel gods presence
What is faith
When you believe in something that cannot totally be proven
Who suggested the first cause (cosmological) argument and when
Saint Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century
What is the first cause (cosmological) argument
Everything is constantly changing
All these changes are caused by something else, which in turn is caused by something else
Must be one thing that started everything - the “first cause”/God
Weaknesses of the first cause (cosmological) argument
Maybe things happen without a cause - Big Bang
Existence of universe is God but existence of a god is left unexplained
If God is creator why create hurricanes, tsunamis, disease and death

Atheist
Theist
Agnostic
Atheist - doesn’t believe in God
Theist - believes in God
Agnostic - doesn’t know whether there is a god or not
