Philosophies of Nursing Flashcards
what is a paradigm?
a model that explains linkage of science, philosophy, and theory accepted and applied by the discipline
Metaparadigm
most global and abstract concepts that identify the phenomena of the discipline
Nursing is composed of…
Person, Health, Environment, and Nursing
Person…
recipient of nursing care
Health…
the degree of wellness or well being the client experience
Environment…
internal/external surroundings that affect client
Nursing…
attributes, characteristics, and actions of the nurse, providing care on behalf, or in conjunction with the client
what is philosophy?
broad connected statements about beliefs and values
philosophy in nursing?
presents the general meaning of nursing and nursing phenomena through analysis, reasoning, and logical presentation of ideas
philosophy statements
“this we believe” statements - reflect values, goals, or options - based on opinions, cannot be scientifically tested
framework…
brief explanation of a theory of those portions of a theory to be tested in a study
model…
an idea that explains, by using symbolic and physical visualization
components of theory
concepts, definitions, assumptions, and phenomenon
concepts
ideas and mental images that help to describe phenomena
definitions
convey the ground meaning of the concepts
assumptions
statements that describe concepts
phenomenon
aspect of reality that can be consciously sensed or experienced
Empirical Rational Philosophy of Science
based on scientific method as only way for developing scientific knowledge
Phenomenological Philosophy of Science
views truth as a matter of perspective. truth is relative and there is no objective reality
Purpose of Nursing Theories
Describing, predicting, explaining, and/or prescribing nursing care
enables nurses to know WHY they are doing WHAT they are doing
grand theories
provide structural framework for broad, abstract ideas about Nursing
middle range theories
narrower than grand: made up of limited number of concepts that are written at a relatively concrete and specific level
Why study nursing theory?
both practice and theory are guided by values and beliefs - reframes our thinking about nursing - guides ideas and techniques - close gap between theory and research
how do nurses use theory in everyday practice?
organize, understand, analyze, make decisions, plan, predict, evaluate
