What is Kants view on how Knowledge is created?
Kant’s theory of knowledge is summed up in a statement: “Thoughts without contents are empty; intuitions without concepts are blind.” or lack of one element makes knowledge impossible. The interplaying of sensibility (with its power to receive) and understanding (with its power to think) comes about knowledge.
Possibly, Kant’s best advice was: Dare to Know. His goal was that each person would take responsibility and think for themselves. To accomplish this, everyone must question the teachings of their church and the authority of their government. He passionately believed rational reasoning was the key to being a better person. - Don’t Generalize from a Few Experiences
- Don’t Assume Future Experiences Will Resemble Past Experiences
- Visioning the Future Can Bias Your Future Experiences
- Reflecting on Past Experiences Produces Biased Memories
- Some Experiences Involve Randomness, Luck
- Life’s Experiences Can’t Be Relived
- Association/Correlation Does Not Prove Causation
- Experiences Take on “NEW” Meaning Over Time
What is Motivated Reasoning?
Recent research in neuroscience and psychology has shown emotional and rational thinking are far more intertwined than originally thought. Emotional thinking is activated a few milliseconds ahead of our rational thinking. From this research emerged the concept of “motivated reasoning”. Paraphrasing University of Virginia psychologist Jonathan Haidt:
we believe we’re thinking like scientists doing rational reasoning – our quest is the truth, but in fact we’re thinking like lawyers doing _motivated reasoning_ – our quest is to win the games of personal power, profit and pleasure. (Click herefor more, pg. 26-27 & pg. 29 of Intro Chapters)
