Phenol Flashcards
1
Q
Reaction undergone by phenol
A
Electrophilic substitution
2
Q
Bromination of phenol
A
Add: 3Br2
Forms: 2,4,6-tribromophenol + 3HBr
3
Q
Nitration of phenol
A
Add: HNO3
FormsP: 2-nitrophenol or 4-nitrophenol + H2O
4
Q
Neutralisation of phenol
A
Add: NaOH
Forms: sodium phenoxide + H2O
5
Q
Reactivity of phenol
A
More reactive than benzene due to the lone pair of electrons from oxygen (in OH) p-orbital being donated to the pi system of phenol. This increases the electron density which attracts electrophiles more.
6
Q
Phenol as a weak acid
A
It partially dissociates into a phenoxide- ion and H+ ion.
