New Moon
it is the instant when the Moon and the Sun have the same ecliptical longitude
Phase
One of the different apparent shapes of the moon as seen from Earth.
Waxing crescent
the sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half, so it is a waxing crescent
1st/3rd Quarter
The first quarter and third quarter moons (both often called a “half moon”), happen when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. Half of the moon is lit up.
Waxing gibbous
Where almost all of the moon is lit up with sunlight.
Full Moon
When the entire moon is lit up by sunlight
Waning Gibbous
The same thing as a waxing gibbous, but flipped to where the darkness appears on the opposite side
Waning crescent
The same thing as a waxing crescent but the darkness is on the other side
Eclipse
Where a celestial body overlaps/blocks another
Solar eclipse
Where the sun covers the moon
Lunar eclipse
Where the moon covers the sun
