New moon
the phase of the moon when it is in conjunction with the sun and invisible from earth, or shortly thereafter when it appears as a slender crescent.
Phases
any of the major appearances or aspects in which a thing of varying modes or conditions manifests itself to the eye or mind.
Waxing cresent
the moon at any time after new moon and before full moon, so called because its illuminated area is increasing.
First quater
the instant, approximately one week after a new moon, when one half of the moon’s disk is illuminated by the sun.
Full moon
the phase of the moon in which its whole disk is illuminated.
Waning gibbous
The waning gibbous moon, is defined to occur when the Moon appears to be more than one-half but not fully illuminated by direct sunlight.
Last quater
the instant, approximately one week after a full moon, when half of the moon’s disk is illuminated by the sun.
Waning cresent
the moon at any time after full moon and before new moon (so called because its illuminated area is decreasing).
Eclipse
an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer or between it and its source of illumination.
Solar eclipse
an eclipse in which the sun is obscured by the moon.
Lunar eclipse
an eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth’s shadow.
