Phases of Meiosis Flashcards
This is the information of the above topic.
Where do the phases of Meiosis occur?
In sex cells (egg and sperm)
What is the purpose of meiosis?
To reduce the number of chromosomes in gametes
What are the two divisions in meiosis?
Meiosis I and Meiosis II
What happens during interphase?
The chromosomes replicate
What happens during Prophase 1?
Chromosomes shorten and thicken. They also pair with homologous chromosomes to form a tetrad
What happens in Metaphase 1?
Tetrads line up in the middle of the cell
What happens in Anaphase 1?
The tetrads break apart and the pairs move to opposite sides of the cell, while sister chromatids attached at their centromeres
What happens during Telophase 1?
The cell separates into two cells.
What happens during Prophase 2?
The pairs of sister chromatids start moving toward the center
What happens during Metaphase 2?
Pairs of sister chromatids line up at the center
What happens during Anaphase 2?
The Paris of sister chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell
What happens during Telophase 2?
This results in four new haploid (1N) cells
What is the importance of mitosis?
1 (2N) cell results in 4 (1N) cell
The chromosome number of the egg and sperm is cut in half to insure that the zygote will have the proper number of chromosomes
When does crossing over happen?
Prophase 1
How many chromatids does a tetrad have?
4
