Asexual and Sexual Reproduction Overview Flashcards
This is an overview of sexual and asexual reproduction.
What is asexual reproduction?
Offspring are produced by only one parent. Each parent passes ALL of its genes to its offspring.
What are some advantages of asexual reproduction?
It’s faster, more offspring can be produced, and there is no need to find a mate
What are some disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
There is no variation in offspring, and adaptation ability is greatly reduced
What is sexual reproduction?
Requires two parents. Each parent passes half of its genes to its offspring
What is the advantage of sexual reproduction?
Genetic diversity
What are some disadvantages to sexual reproduction?
Must find a mate, fewer offspring produced, and it is slower
What three things does sexual reproduction always involve?
Gametes (sex cells), fertilization (Union of sperm and egg, and zygote (fertilized egg)
