PHASE OF MATTER Flashcards
It is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space
Matter
The distinct forms in which matter can exist, including solid, liquid, and gas.
Phase of Matter
A phase of matter characterized by particles arranged in a fixed, orderly structure, with definite shape and volume.
Solid
A phase of matter characterized by particles that are close together but can move past each other, taking the shape of their container and having a definite volume.
Liquid
A phase of matter characterized by particles that are far apart and move freely, filling the entire volume of their container and having neither definite shape nor volume.
Gas
A phase of matter similar to gas but consisting of charged particles, commonly found in stars and other high-energy environments.
Plasma
A phase of matter formed at extremely low temperatures, where particles behave as a single quantum entity, exhibiting wave-like properties.
Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC)
The process of changing from a solid to a liquid state, typically by heating.
Melting
The process of changing from a liquid to a solid state, typically by cooling.
Freezing
The process of changing from a liquid to a gas state at temperatures below the boiling point, occurring at the surface of the liquid.
Evaporation
Process of a gas turning into a liquid.
Condensation
Process of a substance directly transitioning from solid to gas without passing through the liquid phase.
Sublimation
Process of substance transitioning gas directly to solid phase without passing through the liquid state.
Deposition
