Phase II Electricity and Magnetism Flashcards
Matter
Has mass and occupies space. Based on temperature.
- Solid - low temperature, atoms stick together.
- Liquid - with added energy, atoms can move around but remain together.
- Gas - with even more energy, atoms can disassociate from each other.
- Plasma - high temperature, electrons will dispersed when released and emit EM radiation.
Neutrons
Very massive NOT fundamental particle found in the nucleus of an atom and have NO charge
Protons
Very massive NOT fundamental found in the atom’s nucleus with POSITIVE charge
Electrons
Very little mass, FUNDAMENTAL particles with negative charge found in the outer rings of an atom
Photons
Packets of energy, no mass
Quantum Leap
When energized (by photons) electron jump from one energy shell to another
Energy
Does NOT have any mass, does NOT occupy space, cannot be created nor destroyed. Capacity to cause change. Total energy = KE + PE
Kinetic Energy (KE)
Associated with movement
Potential Energy (PE)
Associated with height; it is stored energy.
Photoelectric Absorption/Emmission
A photon absorbed/emitted by an electron. Energy equals exactly the quantum leap
Ionization
High energy photon is absorbed by an electron, the electron jumps to infinity
Photo-electric effect
Excess energy manifests as kinetic energy
Fusion
Light nuclei combine to form new heavy element
Fission
Heavy nuclei divide to form new light elements
