Pharynx and Esophagus Flashcards
Compartments
-interior of mouth and throat
-Food and air passage
Regions
Nasopharynx
Oropharyngeal= Oropharynx + Hypopharynx
Superior, Middle, and Inferior Pharyngeal Constrictors
Location: Oropharyngeal
Function: Collapses the oropharynx and hypopharynx
Larynx
Function:
-During swallowing, musculature contracts and moves trachea up and forward–>opens upper esophageal sphincter
-Separates esophagus and trachea
Upper Esophageal Sphincter(UES)
-Made of skeletal muscle
-High pressure(40-100mmHg)
-Closed
-PNS input
-Inspiration, cough, sneeze: contracts tighter
Lower Esophageal Sphincter(LES)
-Less defined compared to UES
-Weak pressure 10-12mmHG
-smooth muscle
-Surrounded by diaphragm
-inspiration, cough, sneeze, increase of gastric load: INCREASE in TONE
Esophagus
-Transit tube
-10-12 inches
-Upper 1/3: skeletal muscle Middle 1/3: mix Lower 1/3: smooth muscle
