Pharynx Flashcards
Pharynx
continuation of the digestive tube below the oral and nasal cavities. 3 parts: nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.
Nasopharynx
Most superior portion of the pharynx; posterior to the nose
Oropharynx
Middle portion of the pharynx; posterior to the mouth
Laryngopharynx
Inferior portion of the pharynx; posterior to the larynx
Superior opening of the Pharynx
Nasopharynx, at the base of the skull.
Inferior opening of the pharynx
At level of cricoid cartilage of larynx and the 6th cervical vertebra
Pharyngeal wall
5 levels: Mucus membrane, submucosa, pharyngobasilar fascia, skeletal muscle layer, buccopharyngeal layer
Mucus membrane
Most anterior layer of the pharyngeal wall
Submucosa
Below the muscus membrane of the pharynx (duh).
Pharyngobasilar fascia
Situated between muscosa and muscular layers. Diminishes in thickness as it descends
Skeletal muscle layer
Level is comprised of the constrictor muscles of the pharynx. Between pharyngobasilar fascia and buccopharyngeal fascia layer.
Buccopharyngeal fascia layer
Invests constrictor muscles of the pharynx. Space between the the buccopharyngeal fascia and prevertebral fascia is the Retropharyngeal space. Contains the pharyngeal plexus.
Superior Constrictor
Largest of the three constrictor muscles; Originates from the pterygoid hamulus, pterygomandibular raphe and mandible. It has an additional attachment at the pharyngeal tubercle of the occipital bone. Innervated by the pharyngeal plexus
Middle Constrictor Muscle
Constrictor muscle of the pharynx. Originates from the hyoid bone. Innervated by the pharyngeal plexus
Inferior Constrictor Muscle
Originates from the thyroid cartilage, blends with the esophagus inferiorly. Innervated by the pharyngeal plexus.
