What is pharyngitis?
Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx, resulting in a sore throat.
What are some viral, bacterial and fungal causes of pharyngitis?
Viral - adenovirus, coronaviruses, EBV, influenza virus.
Bacterial - group A streptococci predominantly, but also other beta-haemolytic streptococci.
Fungal - candida albicans.
What other symptoms may they experience?
Fever, shivers, fatigue.
Symptoms are specific to the cause of the infection.
How is pharyngitis treated supportively?
Usually self-limiting so predominantly supportive measures such as rest and hydration. They can gargle salt water, eat cold, soft foods, and avoid smoking.
When would specific treatment be given, and what is it?
If it is a streptococcal infection.
They are usually given beta-lactam, cell wall synthesis inhibitors.
