  • Controlled substances for kits must be obtained from a DEA registered hospital, pharmacy or practitioner
  • Controlled substances in kits may only be administered under emergency conditions
  • A proof-of-use sheet must be contained in the emergency medication kit for each separate controlled substance. The consultant pharmacist must collect the completed sheets and file them for 2 years
  • Whenever a kit is opened, the consultant pharmacist must be notified within 24 hours
  • After the kit is opened, each shift must count the remaining kit contents until the consultant pharmacist is able to lock or close the kit
  • The consultant pharmacist must audit the kit at least monthly

A pharmacist who works 6 continuous hours or longer per day is allowed at least one 30-minute uninterrupted meal break and one 15-minute break during the 6-hour period.

If working a 12-hour shift, an additional 15-minute break is allowed.

If a private break room is available, the pharmacist must be allowed to use it.

If the pharmacy does not close, the pharmacist must remain on the property of the licensed pharmacy.

2) The patient declines to wait and gives their telephone number to the staff; AND
3) After returning from the break, the pharmacist contacts the patient and provides counseling; AND
4) The pharmacist documents the counseling provided or documents why counseling was not provided after at least 2 attempts.
