what is THE ROLE or function of PSAB
pharmacist specialist accreditation board:
1) define specialties
2) determine requirements for specialist registration = accredit training programme

4) recommend to council programmes for CPE of specialists
5) advice council on matters affecting or connected with registration of specialists under the act
why was register of specialist created
1) more opportunities and career pathways
2) more specialised knowledge and expertise needed in certain fields to improve safety, evidence-based, cost-effective use of meds and patient outcomes
composition of PSAB
atleast 6 registered pharmacists appointed by minister
1 chairperson from among board member appointed by minister
service term for psab members
should not exceed 3 years
but can be reappointed or removed at any time
what happens if a member of the board is removed/resigns/passes on
minister fills the vacancy with another registered pharmacists for the remainder of the term of the previous person

what criteria must be fulfilled for specialist accreditation?
1) fully registered with SPC, holding a valid practising cert, currently practising in SG
2) valid speciality cert recognised by PSAB (BPS)
3) relevant post grad education
4) successfully completed relevant residency training
- R1: 1 y full time residency training in broad based pharmacotherapy recognised by PSAB
- R2: 1y full time residency training in specialty applied recognised by PSAB
5) accumulate 1 year (continuous or otherwise) of specialty practice experience in the specialty applied for after completion of PSAB recongised specialty residency training, in the 3y preceding application (should not be from post grad or full time; independent training)
6) meet competency standards set out in the evaluation guidance for specialist practice scope at entry level (submit 3 recent and relevant examples using CV template)
7) meet necessary criteria by PSAB
where is specialty certification obtained
from the board of pharmacy specialities (BPS), USA
what is the R1 and R2 programmes
R1: broad based PHARMACOTHERAPY training = build competencies in patient care delivery
R2: specialty training = build on r1 and continue training in the specialty
what to submit to PSAB for pharmacy specialisation?
- CV with competency standards
- R1 R2 certification
- post grad degree
- specialty cert from BPS
- evidence of independent speciality practice after residency training
