Who can apply for an intern permit?
- Enrolled in pharmacy program
- completed first year of professional study
Graduates of non-accredited program (inc foreign):
- graduated from their program and are beginning their 2080 hrs of interning for licensure

Hours required to get an intern permit?
none
Preceptor requirements
must have at least 1 year of pharmacy experience
immediate & personal supervision of the intern
Requirements for “registered pharmacy technicians”
- Application to NYSED
- High school grad or equivalent
- Accredited pharm tech certification program
- at least 18 years old
- good moral character
- initial license fee $75
- $100 every registration period (3 yrs)
Ratio of pharmacist to techs and interns
1 pharmacist : 2 registered pharm techs
1 pharmacist : 4 unlicensed personnel
What can unlicensed personnel do?
-count drugs & place into containers
-label Rx bottles
-prepare manual records for RPh signature or initials
- deliver Rx to patient
- advise on availability of counseling to be conducted by RPh or pharmacy intern
What can a registered pharmacy tech do?
Same as unlicensed personnel +
Under direct supervision of RPh:
- compounding
- preparing
- labeling
- dispensing
- may fill valid prescriptions or med orders for tasks requiring no professional judgement
