Pharmacology Flashcards
NSAIDS
commonly prescribed for pain and inflammation - ibuprofen (motrin)
provide analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic capabilities
side effects: GI irritation, fluid retention, renal or liver problems and prolonged bleeding
Examples: ibuprofen (motrin), naproxen sodium (aleve), salsalate (discalced) and indomethacin (indocin)
Muscle relaxants
prescribed for skeletal muscle spasm
Examples: cyclobenzapine HCl (flexeril), methocarbamol (robaxin) and carisopprodol (soma)
act on the CNS to reduce skeletal muscle tone by depressing the internuncial neurons of the brain stem and SC
Side effects: drowsiness, lethargy, ataxia, and decreased alertness
Nonnarcotic analgesics
Example: acetaminophen (tylenol)
prescribed when NSAIDS are contraindicated- GI problems
act on the CNS to alter pain response
adverse side effects: negligible when taken in recommended doses. Excessive amounts may lead to liver disease or acute liver shutdown.
Narcotic analgesics
codeine, percocet (combo of tylenol and oxycodone), morphine.
bind with opiate receptors in CNS
side effects: sedation, hypotension, bradycardia, respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, light headedness and physical dependence
