Pharmacology Flashcards
agonist
A compound that binds to and activates a receptor - produce response
antagonist
A compound that reduces the effect of an agonist at a receptor - block response
competitive antagonist
binds to the same sight as agonist and competes for binding
non-competitive antagonist
binds to a site different from agonist site and induces a conformational change which restricts binding
partial agonist
A low efficacy agonist that is unable to elicit the maximal response from a receptor, irrespective of the concentration applied
affinity
A measure of the equilibrium constant of the reversible reaction between a drug (agonist or antagonist) and a receptor - strength of binding
efficacy
A measure of the magnitude of the (cellular) response produced when an agonist binds to a receptor - ability to evoke cellular response
potency
A measure of the concentration of a drug at which it produces an effect of a given magnitude
agonist mechanism
agonist binds to receptor resulting in activation which generates a response
antagonist mechanism
binds to the receptor but fails to activate it so no response is generated
agonists possess
affinity and efficiancy
antagonists possess
affinity only
