Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
what is meant by pharmacokinetics?
what effects the body has on drugs
what is meant by pharmacodynamics?
what effect drugs have on the body
what are the different routes of administration for drugs?
- oral
- transdermal
- transmucosal
- intravenous
- intramuscular
- subcutaneous
- inhalation
what is meant by transdermal?
drugs delivered across skin for systemic distribution
what is meant by transmucosal?
drugs diffused through the mucous membrane
what are intravenous drugs?
drugs administered into a vein/veins
what are intramuscular drugs?
drug administered into muscles
what are subcutaneous drugs?
drugs administered/applied under the skin
what are some advantages of oral drugs?
- socially acceptable
what are some contraindications of oral drug use?
- slow onset
- may cause gastric ulceration
- undergoes first pass metabolism
what is meant by first pass metabolism?
the concentration of a drug is greatly reduced before reaching the systemic circulation due to:
- absorption in the gut
- metabolism in the liver
when a drug reaches the liver, what can happen?
- inactivates drug
- activates drug
what are some advantages of IV/IM drug administration?
- very rapid onset
- no first pass metabolism
- predictable plasma levels
what are some disadvantages of IV/IM drug administration?
- allergic reactions are more severe
- short duration of action
- difficulty of access/self medication not possible
- higher drug cost
what are some advantages of transdermal & subcutaneous drug administration?
- no first pass metabolism
- allergic reactions often very localised
- prolonged action
