how does alcohol intake affect drug absorption?
- alcoholics develop cirrhosis which stops the liver working properly
- drugs are not metabolised correctly in the liver
if a patient requires antibiotics, but they are allergic to penicillin, what drug cannot be given? what could you potentially substitute in its place?
AMOXICILLIN is derived from penicillin
- you could give metronidazole
what is metronidazole used for?
treatment of bacterial infections
- good for treating bad periodontitis
who cannot receive metronidazole?
pregnant patients as it is a teratogenic drug
what are examples of dental analgesics that may be given to patients?
- paracetamol (2 500mg every 4 hours)
- ibuprofen (two 200mg every 6-8 hours)
who should NOT be prescribed with ibuprofen?
- asthma
- peptic ulceration
- blood thinner patients
what are examples of drugs used for conscious sedation?
- midazolam
- nitrous oxide
what are emergency medications that every dental surgery must have?
- GTN spray
- aspirin 300mg
- glucagon
- adrenaline 500micrograms of 1:1000
