Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
What are the four stages of pharmacokinetics?
Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion.
What is the role of Cytochrome P450?
It speeds up drug metabolism in the liver.
What does a drug need to be in order to move from plasma to tissues?
It must be free, unbound, and able to act.
What is bioavailability?
The proportion of a drug that reaches the systemic circulation.
Why do IV drugs have 100% bioavailability?
Because they bypass the liver and first-pass metabolism.
What is first-pass metabolism?
The reduction in drug bioavailability as it passes through the liver after GI absorption.
What is a therapeutic window?
The range between the effective dose and the toxic dose of a drug.
Why are lipid-soluble drugs given in smaller doses to children?
Children have less body fat, leading to higher risk of toxicity.
What is pharmacodynamics?
The effect of the drug on the body.
What is pharmacokinetics?
The effect of the body on the drug.
