Pharmacokinetics Flashcards
Define absorption (of a drug)
transportation of the unmetabolised drug from the site of administration to the body circulation system
Define enteral absorption
Enteral absorption is drug that is metabolised via the human gut (as in oral medication)
Define parenteral absorption
Not absorbed via the gut/alimentary tract e.g. IV, SC, IM etc
Define Distribution
The reversible movement of drug between body compartments once it has entered the systemic circulation
Define volume of distribution
the amount of drug in the body compared with concentration of the drug in the blood plasma. This predicts whether the drug will largely collect in the blood or in the tissue. Drugs that remain within the vascular system will have a low volume of distribution, while drugs that are highly bound to tissue will have a high volume of distribution
