Pharamcodynamics Flashcards
what is pharmacodynamics?
what the drug does to the body
the study of the mechanisms by which specific drug dosages act to produce biochemical or physiological changes in the body
define receptors
receptors are macromolecules that mediate a biological change following ligand (Drug) binding
define agonists
have affinity for receptor (they bind to it)
have intrinsic activity (binding elicits a response)
define antagonists
aka receptor blocker or inhibitors
have affinity (can bind to the receptor)
Lack intrinsic activity (no response)
what is drug effectiveness
effectiveness of a drug is directly related to the pharmacodynamics and kinetics
What are the naturally occurring molecules that bind to receptors called?
Endogenous
what are the foreign molecules called that bind to receptors?
Exogenous
what is an example of an endogenous molecule that binds to an opioid receptors?
endorphins
what is an example of exogenous molecule that binds to an opioid receptor?
morphine
what are the import measure included in drug effectiveness?
affinity, Potency, Efficacy
Define Affinity in relation to drug effectiveness.
affintiy is the drugs ability to bind to a receptor by direct chemical interactions with the receptor binding site. High affinity will bind well and low affinity will not bind as well
define Potency in relation to drug effectiveness
potency is the ability of a drug to produce a tissue response
define efficacy
the ability of a drug, once bound to its receptor and imitate cellular signaling pathways leading to a tissue response
define dose response
depicts the relationship between drug dose and magnitude of drug effect
What is EC50
The concentration which induces a response halfway between baseline and maximum
