Phagocytosis Flashcards

1

Q

What do phagocytes do?

Q

What is the first step of phagocytosis?

A

Chemical products of pathogens or dead, damaged and abnormal cells act as attractant causing the phagocytes to move towards the pathogen.

Q

What happens in phagocytosis after the phagocyte has moved towards the pathogen along the concentration gradient?

A

The receptors on the cell of the phagocyte recognise, and attach to, chemicals on the surface of the pathogen.

They engulf the pathogen to form a vesicle, known as a phagosome.

lysosomes within the phagocyte move towards the phagosome. They then release their lysozymes into the phagosome, where they hydrolyse the pathogen.

the soluble products are absorbed into the cytoplasm of the phagocyte.
