Phagocytes: Flashcards
1
Q
Manufactured in bone marrow.
Neutrophils:
A
Travel in the blood and squeeze out into the tissue fluid. They are short-lived and released in large numbers quickly as a result of an infection. Neutrophils die after digesting a few pathogens, collecting to form pus. Specialisations:
- Receptors on plasma membrane that can bind to opsonin or specific antigen.
- Multi-lobed nucleus that allows cell to squeeze through narrow gaps.
- Well-developed cytoskeleton that helps the cell change shape to engulf pathogens and move
lysosomes around in the cell. - Many lysosomes containing hydrolytic enzymes.
- Many mitochondria, to release energy from glucose for movement of cytoskeleton.
- Many ribosomes, to synthesise new enzymes involved.

Q
Macrophages:
A
Larger than Neutrophils and live longer, Kidney-bean shaped nucleus. Travel in the blood as monocytes, most in lymph nodes, where they mature into macrophages. Do not fully digest pathogens, form APCs.
