pH - Unit 2 Flashcards
What does pH measure?
It measures the concentration of the hydronium ion in solution (H3O+) and all aqueous solutions containing water
What happens when the pH of a solution decreases?
The concentration of hydrogen ions increase
What are the sections of the pH scale?
> 7 = acidic solution
7 = neutral solution
<7 = basic solution
Arrhenius Model - Acids
According to the Arrhenius Model, an acid is a covalent molecular compound, which when dissolved in water, forms hydrogen as the only cation
What are hydrogen ions responsible for?
Hydrogen ions are responsible for ALL acidic properties
Arrhenius Model - Bases
According to the Arrhenius Model, a base is a compound that is considered as the chemical opposite to an acid
It contains a hydroxide ion OH-
What is a strong acid?
A strong acid is one that completely ionises in water
What is a weak acid?
A weak acid is one that only slightly ionises in water
How to determine strength?
A lower pH means a higher concentration of hydrogen ions which means a stronger acid
How is the pH of a solution defined?
[H3O+] = 10-pH
