pH of weak acids/bases Flashcards
1
Q
Reaction of “Strong acids and bases”
A
Complete ionization/dissociation in solution
2
Q
Reaction of “Weak acids and bases”
A
Incomplete ionization/dissociation in solution ( ionized and non-ionized forms are in equilibrium )
3
Q
What is “Degree of dissociation (a)”?
A
a = moles in ionized form, (H+) / total number of moles, C
4
Q
What are “Acid-base indicators”?
A
- Indicators are substances which change color with pH. They are usually weak
acids or bases, which when dissolved in water dissociate slightly and form ions. - At low pH value, the concentration of H+ is high so the equil position lies to the left, and has the color A
- At high pH value, the concentration of H+ is low so the equil position lies to the right, and has the color B
