pH Flashcards
def of concentration
the amount of solute in a particular volume
def of pH
“potential of hydrogen”
def of pOH
“potential of hydroxide”
def of hydroxide ion
a molecule with an oxygen and a hydrogen. partial negative charge
def of hydronium ion
a molecule with three hydrogen and one oxygen. partial positive charge
def of acid
[H3O+] > [OH-]
def of base
[H3O+] < [OH-]
if given a pOH of 6, what is the pH, [H3O+], [OH-]?
pH- 8 [H3O+]- 10^-8 [OH-]-10^-6
if given a [H3O+] of 10^-7, what is the pH, [OH-], pOH
pH-7 [OH-]-10^-7 pOH-7
How do you determine if a substance is acidic, neutral, or basic when given the pH, [H3O+], [OH-], pOH
For any of the given info, if it 7 or 10^-7, then it is neutral. When the pH and [H3O+] is lower than 7, and the pOH is higher than 7 then it is acidic. Vice versa for basic.
Compare the concentrations of [H3O+] and [OH-] of solutions with two different pHs
[H3O+] and [OH-] always add up to 10^-14, so if one is greater than 10^-7, the other will be smaller than 10^-7 and vice versa.
