Q

Why is cohesion and adhesion important for living things?

A

They allow plants to get water from their roots to their branches. Also allows some animals to “walk on water”

Q

Why is ice being less dense than liquid water important to living things?

A

Surface ice insulates water below which allows animals who live in water to stay warm in winter months.

Q

Why is the high specific heat of water important to living things?

A

People who live near coastal areas will have a more stable climate whereas people who live inland will have more fluctuating weather

Q

Why is the heat of vaporization important to living things?

A

This helps organisms cool down their bodies. ex. sweat

Q

How does water’s polarity or ability to make hydrogen bonds give it each property?

A

1:C + A - since water is polar it is able to bond with other substances and itself. 2:solvent -water is polar and is able to bond to a lot of substances 3:ice vs. water-in ice hydrogen bonds are stable because the molecules don’t move but in liquid they are constantly breaking and reforming 4:specific heat-water has a high specific heat because of the strength of the hydrogen bonds 5:vaporization-it takes a lot of energy for water to vaporize because hydrogen bonds must be completely broken which is hard to do.
