5 properties of water Flashcards
What are the 5 properties of water?
- cohesion & adhesion 2.Water is the solvent of life 3. Ice is less dense than liquid water 4. High specific heat 5. Heat of vaporization
def of cohesion
bonding between water molecules
def of adhesion
bonding between water and other substances
def of solvent
a substance that dissolves solutes to form a solution
def of specific heat
the amount of energy it takes to heat up 1 g. of a substance by 1 C
def of heat of vaporization
the amount of energy it takes for 1 g. of water to evaporate
Why is cohesion and adhesion important for living things?
They allow plants to get water from their roots to their branches. Also allows some animals to “walk on water”
Why is water being the solvent of life important to living things?
It is vital for the transportation of nutrients in the body
Why is ice being less dense than liquid water important to living things?
Surface ice insulates water below which allows animals who live in water to stay warm in winter months.
Why is the high specific heat of water important to living things?
People who live near coastal areas will have a more stable climate whereas people who live inland will have more fluctuating weather
Why is the heat of vaporization important to living things?
This helps organisms cool down their bodies. ex. sweat
How does water’s polarity or ability to make hydrogen bonds give it each property?
1:C + A - since water is polar it is able to bond with other substances and itself. 2:solvent -water is polar and is able to bond to a lot of substances 3:ice vs. water-in ice hydrogen bonds are stable because the molecules don’t move but in liquid they are constantly breaking and reforming 4:specific heat-water has a high specific heat because of the strength of the hydrogen bonds 5:vaporization-it takes a lot of energy for water to vaporize because hydrogen bonds must be completely broken which is hard to do.
