PET ISSUES Flashcards
What are the five practical issues?
-Time and money
-Requirements of funding bodies
-Personal skills and characteristics
-Subject matter
-Research opportunity
time and money PRACTICAL
choice of method may be influenced on amount of money and time required
Requirements of funding PRACTICAL
Research institutes, businesses and other organisations tabt provide the funding for research may require the results to be in a particular form
Personal skills and characteristics PRACTICAL
Each sociologist will have different personal skills which may effect their ability to use different methods
Subject matter PRACTICAL
It may be harder to study a particular group or subject by one method or another
Research opportunity PRACTICAL
Sometimes the opportunity to carry out the research occurs unexpectedly amd this means it might not be possible to use structured methods such as a questionnaire which takes longer to prepare
What are the five ethical issues?
Informed consent
Confidentiality and privacy
Harm to participants
Vunerable groups
Covert research
Informed consent ETHICAL
Participants should be offered the right to refuse to be involved in
Confidentiality and privacy ETHICAL
Researchers should keep the identity of participants secret in order to help to prevent possible negative effects on them
Harm to participants ETHICAL
Researchers need to be aware pf the possible effects of their work on those they study

Special care should be taken where participants are vulnerable because of their age, disability or physical and mental health
Covert research ETHICAL
When the researcher’s identity and research purpose are hidden from the people being studied
What are the four theoretical issues?
Validity
Reliability
Representativeness
Methodological perspective
Validity THEORETICAL
A valid method is one that produces a true and genuine picture of what something is really like
Reliability THEORETICAL
A reliable method is one in which when repeated gives the same results
