PET Flashcards
1
Q
FDG PET CT protocol
A
- FDG (F18 - Fluorodeoxyglucose ) is radioactive glucose.
- Maps glucose uptake by cells.
- Can detect any biological process that leads to increase in glucose uptake/metabolism.
- Common applications include malignancy, infection & inflammation.
2
Q
Stages of the patient journey
A
- Fasting.
- Injection.
- Uptake/Rest.
- Image acquisition.
- Image interpretation and report generation
3
Q
Why is fasting required?
A
- Reduces the competitive inhibition of dietary glucose.
- Reduces insulin levels (insulin pushes FDG into storage organs – i.e. muscles and liver).
4-6 hours prior to the test (Ideally at least 6 hours).
4
Q
Injection protocol
A
- Blood sugar checked (ideally <7 mmol/L but no more than 10 mmol/L).
- Patient weighed, dose calculated and administered.
5
Q
Uptake/ rest requirements of FDG PET
A
Uptake requires 30-90 mins
Patient should rest to avoid muscle uptake.
For brain imaging room should be darkened and sensory stimuli reduced to the minimum.
Room needs to be warm (brown fat activation).
6
Q
How is inflammation and malignancy distinguished?
A
For inflammation clearance starts at around 60 mins
7
Q
PET acquisition procedure
A
Takes approx 15 – 30 mins.
Patient need to lie flat.
Deep gantry – claustrophobia
