PET Flashcards

1
Q

FDG PET CT protocol

A
  • FDG (F18 - Fluorodeoxyglucose ) is radioactive glucose.
  • Maps glucose uptake by cells.
  • Can detect any biological process that leads to increase in glucose uptake/metabolism.
  • Common applications include malignancy, infection & inflammation.

Q

Why is fasting required?

A
  • Reduces the competitive inhibition of dietary glucose.
  • Reduces insulin levels (insulin pushes FDG into storage organs – i.e. muscles and liver).

4-6 hours prior to the test (Ideally at least 6 hours).

Q

Injection protocol

A
  • Blood sugar checked (ideally <7 mmol/L but no more than 10 mmol/L).
  • Patient weighed, dose calculated and administered.

Q

Uptake/ rest requirements of FDG PET

A

Uptake requires 30-90 mins

Patient should rest to avoid muscle uptake.

For brain imaging room should be darkened and sensory stimuli reduced to the minimum.

Room needs to be warm (brown fat activation).
