Pest Control Flashcards
What are the minerals that are in chemical fertilisers?
Nitrates, to help plants produce more amino acids to store energy as enzymes.
Phosphates, used for growth and will help produce DNA/ATP growth.
What are pesticides?
A substance used in plants to destroy small insects or other organims.
How can pest harm the crop?
Lowers the yield by reducing growth.
Effects on the quality of crop.
What are the harmful effects of pesticides?
Slow to decompose.
Bioaccumulation.
Biomagnification.
Kill harmless insects/organisms.
What are the suggestions to reduce harmful effects due to agriculture?
Crop rotation.
Grow legume crops to replace lost nitrates.
Biological control of pests.
What are 4 disadvantages of pesticides?
Lowers yield and quality of crop.
Kill harmless insects/organisms
Leaching can happen which can cause eutrophication.
Reduces water potential and water uptake which causes wilting.
What are 2 disadvantages of biological control?
May not destroy all population at once.
Not easily accessible.
What are 2 advantages of pesticides?
Its fast and effective.
Cheaper and affordable.
What are 2 advantages of biological control?
Kills only specific target organisms.
Doesn’t cause eutrophication.
What is eutrophication?
A water body which gets enriched in dissolved nutrients that stimulate the growth of algae.
