Persuasive Devices Flashcards
Hypothetical Illustration
Examples that suggest probable circumstances in which something would be true; not hard evidence, but rather suggestion of probability. Based in reality and to prove a point.
Expert Testimony
Reported positions or studies of people who are experts in the field.
Analogy
Is not, literally speaking, actual evidence. Powerful comparison between or among ideas that carries weight. The writer compares something abstract and difficult with something concrete and easier to grasp. (Not just any comparison).
Personal Anecdote
Evidence of a writer’s own personal experience or short informal story that exemplifies the point they are making.
Statistics (facts and figures)
Most powerful form of evidence; must be used fairly and come from reliable sources.
