Define Rhetoric
The art of persuasive writing and speaking
Define rhetorical force
Words and expressions have a literal meaning but they also have an emotive meaning
What are rhetorical devices?
Single words or short phrases - sometimes called slanders
Define Euphemism
Neutral or positive expression in place of a negative one
Define Dysphemism
Substitution of a neutral/positive word with another word with a negative connotation
Define weaselers
When inserted into a claim protects it from criticism
What are downplayers?
Are used to make someone or something look less important
What are stereotypes?
Assumptions we make based on groups of people
We come to these conclusions because of popular literature and media
What is Innuendo?
An allusive remark or hint, typically a suggestive one
Relies on neutral phrasing to insinuate something derogatory
What are loaded questions?
Like innuendos it is used to imply something without actually coming out and saying it
(Rests on unjustified assumptions)
Define ridicule/sarcasm
The subjection of someone to insulting and dismissive language or behaviour
Define hyperbole
Extravagant overstatement (i.e., an exaggeration)
What are rhetorical definitions?
Definitions employing rhetorically charged language
Define rhetorical analogy
Likens 2 or more things to make one of them appear better or worse than the other
What are proof surrogates?
Suggest there is evidence for a claim without actually citing any such evidence
